Why Custom Mounting Makes a Difference

Mounting plays an important role in how artwork is presented and preserved. Custom mounting refers to attaching artwork or prints to a backing board in a controlled, considered way — rather than using generic or adhesive-heavy solutions.

What Is Custom Mounting?

Mounting typically involves securing artwork to a rigid backing board to:

  • Keep it flat

  • Prevent rippling

  • Support larger pieces

  • Prepare it for framing

Mounting can be done using different techniques depending on the artwork type.

When Is Mounting Recommended?

Mounting is often suitable for:

  • Posters and prints

  • Photographic works

  • Exhibition material

  • Large-format pieces

However, original or valuable works may require conservation mounting methods instead.

Visual Benefits

Custom mounting can:

  • Improve presentation

  • Enhance perceived quality

  • Add structure

  • Prevent movement within the frame

A well-mounted piece sits cleanly and evenly inside the frame.

Structural Benefits

Mounting helps:

  • Reduce warping

  • Minimise bubbling

  • Improve durability

  • Prepare artwork for acrylic display or lamination

Mounting vs Framing

Mounting is not the same as framing. Mounting supports the artwork. Framing protects and finishes it. They often work together, but serve different purposes.

Is Mounting Permanent?

In many cases, yes. For valuable works, non-adhesive conservation mounting techniques may be more appropriate and these would typically be framed.
